Kinesiology - What's it all about?

Kinesiology serves as an umbrella term for a rapidly expanding group of specialised healing modalities, practised in over 50 countries worldwide. The different branches of kinesiology are united by their use of muscle monitoring and their holistic viewpoint that honours the client's own healing process.

model of Chinese acupuncture energy meridians

Kinesiology (kin-eezy-ology “the study of movement”) was originally a branch of conventional medicine that still studies human physical movement (useful when designing training shoes and medical equipment) that, among other things, developed a system of muscle testing to assess neurological damage affecting muscle function. It was soon realised that muscle function changes for many other reasons that seemed to be related to the traditional Chinese acupuncture model of energy meridians.

According to this model there is a system of pathways or meridians running around the body accessing all the tissues and organs. Energy and information flow through these meridians in a similar way to the nervous system. The development of increasingly sensitive scientific instruments in the 80's led to the discovery that the meridians do, in fact, exist. It was seen that muscle responses would test as though weak when the meridian energy system was disrupted in the same way as they do for disturbances in the nervous system.

Body cells rely on an appropriate energy flow in their environment for their proper function, (see Bruce Lipton PhD: http://www.brucelipton.com/articles/) so imbalances in the energy systems of the body/mind, including the meridians, can lead to malfunction within the body from a cellular level upwards and correcting the energy flow can therefore restore cellular function as well as muscle function.

Since the 1980s, pioneering researchers such as Candace Pert have shown that many medical complaints contain a strong emotional or psychological component. For example, have you ever become unwell after a stressful experience? Most of us have an area in the physical body that becomes vulnerable when we are tired, run down or emotionally stressed.

“The mainstream media tends not to be familiar with what I’ve called ‘new paradigm physiology’ - where our thought patterns are at least as important as our blood pressure.” Candace Pert, PhD, Professor of Physiology and Biophysics.

When prominent micro biology researcher Bruce Lipton PhD experienced Kinesiology muscle testing he wrote, “I was amazed to discover that there was another “mind” another force that was co-piloting my life. More shocking was the fact that this hidden mind, the mind I knew little about (except theoretically in psychology) was actually more powerful than my conscious mind …” (Dr Bruce Lipton ~ “The Biology of Belief”)

"Kinesiology is an extraordinary way of obtaining feedback about how well your body is doing or not, in any given moment. Your body can “talk” and we need to listen in the right way to translate what is going on
in the vast resources of your sub-conscious." .... Benjamin Edom
